Current Events

All fundraising activities should be discussed with QSA staff prior to promotion of the event. An "authority to fundraise" may be needed in some circumstances.

Back to the 50s!

Quaker Service Australia is seeking volunteers around Australia to host a 1950’s fundraising party in their home or meeting house before April 2010.  It is up to you how you interpret the theme. Perhaps you will host an afternoon tea party in your garden, or show a 1950s movie on your television, host a slides night, or simply have some friends around for dinner.

When you invite your F/friends to this event, ask them to make a contribution to QSA. Let’s hold fifty 1950’s parties and aim to raise $5,000! For ideas on 1950s themes, party games and activities, contact QSA on 02 9698 9103 or simply click here. Some people have already organised their events:

Sing-along at Wahroonga

Wahroonga Local Meeting in Sydney has started the ball rolling with a “1950’s Basket lunch and sing-along around the Piano” at their meeting house after meeting on 8th November. After an introduction to QSA, host Julie had the whole room tapping in time to "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Rock around the clock" before Graeme auctioned off a number of covetted dress up items such as Julie's green skirt, a pair of blue suede shoes and his own tie and cravat! Then everyone dined on a feast of vegemite sandwiches, SAOs, and decorated sponge cake. The event raised approx 12 pounds and sixpence (or, more accurately - $87), enough to purchase a garden starter pack for a newly trained farmer in Cambodia.

New Year's Eve Party

David from Perth organised a fundraising party to bring in the New Year (and decade). We look forward to hearing how it went.

Pasta and Trivia Night

Eastern Suburbs Local Meeting in Victoria will hold a Pasta and Trivia Night on Friday 12th February to celebrate QSA's 50th Anniversary. We look forward to hearing how that goes too.

Talk and Tea in Hobart

Gill from Hobart invited Pat Mavromatis to speak at an event on 21st November to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of QSA. Pat was the first person that QSA sent overseas and she has many stories of her time in India to share.

1950s Afternoon tea

Acey, Alis and Julie plan a 50s afternoon tea at Wahroonga.  There will be entertainment (50s style), butterfly cakes and other 50s food, a ‘bring and buy’ table and prizes for 50s items.

50 recipes from the 50s

Acey from Sydney is planning a cook book Quaker Bakers – fifty tried and true recipes from Australian Quaker cooks.  (Recipes welcome)

An anti-50s Party

Taking a new slant on the theme, Michael from Sydney plans to hold a dinner event where invited guests will explore the difficulties of the 1950s for minority groups in Australia and celebrate how far we have come.

Items for sale at Yearly Meeting 2010

As is the tradition, Quaker Service held a stall at Yearly Meeting in January 2010 with our wonderful selection of Cambodian handicrafts and second hand books. This year we were also able to sell Emu Feathers and Aboriginal Flag ropes from Cunnamulla and a selection of ten beautiful artworks from North Queensland. Originals sold for $60 and prints for $5. If you would like to purchase any of these items, please contact us and we will arrange for them to be sent to you.

Gorman House Markets

On Saturday 24th October, Kay de Vogel set up a QSA stall at Gorman House Markets in Canberra with the help of a few other Friends. The stall, which included information about QSA, the Living Gift Catalogue, and Cambodian handidrafts, was a great source of outreach and inspiration, and the volunteer team managed to raise over $101. Well done!

Authors at Ashfield

On Thursday 17th September 2009, Heather Saville addressed a full house at Ashfield Library about her new book "Friends in deed". Heather is the former chair of Quaker Service Australia and author of "Friends in deed". Heather drew on first hand accounts of individuals who have provided aid programs in Cambodia, Vietnam, Uganda and to Aboriginal communities. QSA has focussed on small-scale agriculture, food and water security with vulnerable groups. Micro-financing of income generating activities is covered as well as environmental sustainability. Books were available for sale and signing by Heather.

City to Surf

Yes, we made it! Grant, Tom, Pete and Aletia are pleased to announce that we all finished the race safely and successfully. Some of us were accompanied by friends and family members, and we thank them for their moral support on the day.

And a bit thank you also to everyone who sponsored us this year. QSA Education and Fundraising Officer, Aletia Dundas says "It was really overwhelming to see so many people willing to give us that extra encouragement and to know that you care as much as we do about the work of QSA". We are still counting our pennies, but we know that we have raised at least $1,500 which will support our work with communities overseas and in Australia.Photo left: (L to R) Tom, Pete and Aletia at the start of the race.

Launch of Friends in deed

On 20th March 2009, Quaker Service Australia launched its 50th Anniversary book entitled "Friends in deed". The book, which was written in order to commemorate the work done by QSA over the past fifty years, contains the stories of the many Quakers and others who have been involved in our work. It was wonderful to see so many of those people at the launch on Friday.

The book was launched by John Langmore from the United Nations Association of Australia, and a long time friend of many Quakers. We thank him for stepping in so gratiously.
