Frequently Asked Questions

What are Quaker Service Australia's overheads?

QSA operates on a very modest budget. The office has two paid staff members and a team of volunteers who give their time freely and generously. Our administrative costs are kept to a bare minimum whilst at the same time paying our staff a fair wage and providing a satisfactory working environment to allow our staff to achieve their highest potential. At the moment, we see value in increasing our fundraising and education activities in an attempt to raise the profile of and donor base of the organisation. During our financial year of 2006 - 2007, less than ten percent of QSA’s expenditure was spent on administration.

If QSA gets Government funding, why should we donate?

QSA is accredited with AusAID and therefore receives some of our overseas funds from this source. However, this only covers a small percentage of our overseas project costs and must be matched by QSA funds on a 3:1 ratio. The remainder of this funding is dependant on consistent donor funding. Regular donations enable us to plan our development support in a more strategic manner.

QSA is completely dependent for funds from individual supporters for our work with Indigenous Communities in Australia. QSA values its relationship with Aboriginal groups and communities and always welcomes support for this work.

How does QSA decide which projects to support?

Funding is open to any organisation – it is certainly not necessary to be a Quaker to receive QSA support. However, it is important that potential projects fit our selection criteria and are in keeping with our Statement of Purpose. We do not support projects that include proselytising or ones which benefit an individual rather than a community.

A proposal will be discussed by the Management Committee, who may well seek more details, both about the project and the proposed project partners. This may include asking contacts in the area for an assessment of the value of the proposal. Then an in-principle decision may be made to proceed to the development of a proposal that will be formally assessed. We recognise the value of building long-term relationships with project partners, at the same time as guarding against dependency.
